Women's Legal recognised for excellence in financial counselling

15 October 2026

Women's Legal's financial counsellors have been recognised with Financial Counselling Victoria's 2026 Team Excellence Award.

The award recognises the team's outstanding work supporting victim-survivors of family and sexual violence and driving systemic change to improve outcomes not only for individual clients, but for victim-survivors across Victoria. This includes recent reforms to help victim-survivors unfairly burdened by fines and debt incurred through family violence, helping create fairer pathways to financial security and recovery.

Every day, our financial counsellors help women and non-binary people experiencing family and sexual violence navigate debt, financial hardship and economic abuse. Working alongside lawyers and social workers, they support clients to rebuild financial security, understand their options and move towards safer futures.

As one client told us: “my financial counsellor saved my life”.

Another shared their relief after receiving support to resolve a debt issue: "I'm truly relieved and happy to hear [the debt will not be pursued], especially after everything I've been dealing with and still dealing with”.

My financial counsellor saved my life.

Others highlighted the confidence that comes from having someone in their corner during a difficult time: "her regular check-ins and clear communication raised my confidence and made me feel genuinely supported”.

Financial counselling is an essential part of Women’s Legal’s integrated service model, ensuring victim-survivors can access legal advice, social work support and help with debts and finances in one place as they rebuild safety and stability after violence.

We are incredibly proud of this achievement and grateful for the expertise, compassion and advocacy our financial counsellors bring to their work every day.

Congratulations to the entire team on this well-deserved recognition.
