A safer future starts with a fair settlement

15 July 2026

By supporting women and non-binary people with family law property matters, we can help reduce housing insecurity before it becomes a crisis.

When someone leaves family violence, there are decisions to make about safety, children, money and where to live.

This is when the legal system can shape what happens next and the point at which the Safe Settlements project focuses on helping people.

Delivered by Women’s Legal Service Victoria (Women’s Legal) in partnership with Westjustice, commUnity+Legal and Barwon Community Legal Service, the Safe Settlements project helps women and non-binary people resolve property matters after family violence, so they can secure safe housing and financial stability.

In its first six months, the project has supported more than 100 people with property law advice and casework.

Women’s Legal CEO Claudia Fatone says behind every service is a person building a safer future.

“That’s what makes this project so important,” Ms Fatone said.

“The right support, at the right time, can change the path ahead. And support to have a home, financial security and to stay safe should always be there for Victorians who need it.”

Demand for the service continues to grow, highlighting just how critical this support is.

“This isn’t just legal help. It’s intervention at a critical moment, before instability becomes homelessness.

“We encourage people experiencing family violence to reach out to community legal services when something doesn’t feel safe, fair or right. Leaving violence doesn’t have to mean losing your home or financial instability.”
