Women’s Legal Service Victoria is working with 5 community legal centres across the state to increase access to vital legal support when family violence happens.

The Family Law Capacity Building Program is building high-quality family law services at:

The Federal Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus helped officially launch the program.

“Building expertise (like this) will allow so many vulnerable families to benefit from much-needed family law support,” he said.

Legal support is vital to a person’s recovery from family violence. It can include getting intervention orders, coming up with safe parental plans, securing safe living arrangements, fairly splitting debts and bill or getting a new visa.

Women’s Legal CEO Claudia Fatone said everyone deserves to live free from violence, no matter their income or where they live.

The Family Law Capacity Building Program is building up community legal centres so that more women experiencing family violence can access vital legal support to get safe and recover,” she said.

I am really proud of the program.”

Women’s Legal is also developing online family law training for community legal centres and their staff.

“There is so much unmet legal need in our communities when it comes to family law support – demand from community legal centres to participate in this project is so high.

“We’re eager to work with even more community legal cetres so regardless of where a woman lives, she can access the family law legal help she needs to get safe and stay safe,” Claudia said.
