Women and the Law – Demanding Better for Women and Their Children

We’ve teamed up with local historians to document and celebrate the tireless efforts of hundreds of Victorian women in reforming and improving the law.

For more than 40 years, Women’s Legal Service Victoria volunteers, staff and supporters have used their know-how to champion women’s rights.

“We don’t want the important work of Women’s Legal to be forgotten or ignored,” Women’s Legal CEO Claudia Fatone said.

“Women’s Legal has powerfully impacted the legal landscape in Victoria. We’ve nurtured strong feminist leaders and driven collective action, to advocate for impactful law reform that tackles systemic barriers that impact women receiving fair and just treatment under the law. This has always been driven by our experiences from working with women to solve their legal problems holistically.”‘

After securing a Victorian Government Local History Grant (2022-2023), Women’s Legal started work with History At Work to help build the public record of the organisation’s achievements.

History At Work has found the archive to be historically significant not only as a record of Women’s Legal’s organisational history, but also for its links to the women’s liberation movement of the 1970s, the insights it provides into aspects of the social and political environments that women have operated in during and since the 1970s, and for the depth and breadth of activities Women’s Legal has been involved in since 1982.

The historical archive will preserve the stories of our people, goals, functions, and activities – from when the organisation was first founded by a group of volunteer legal students determined to improve legal responses to sexual assault, discrimination and family violence.

Women’s Legal Service Victoria is now a community legal centre employing over 80 staff who work with thousands of women each year and support sector wide training and capacity building.
